Want a Straighter Smile without Braces? Let’s look at Invisalign!

invisalignIf you are one of the millions of adults who has not been given the right opportunity to straighten your teeth, now may be your time. Historically, the path to a straighter smile was marked with obstacles. Specifically, metal brackets that poked the skin on cheeks and lips, and that trapped food between teeth and the arch wires that pushed and pulled them where they needed to be. This is no longer the norm. Not only do orthodontists now use tooth-colored brackets and wires, but dentists like Dr. Price are using innovative aligner systems to help patients feel great about their smiles.

We are pleased to offer Invisalign treatment to correct a number of different alignment issues. This system is like nothing that has been used before. Often, a “new and improved” way of doing something ends up not being all that great. Not so with Invisalign! This teeth straightening method has been around long enough now for us to realize its potential. In fact, that potential has expanded as the makers of this system continue to make improvements to the mechanism behind aligner trays.

It’s not that Different, is it?
Is Invisalign really all that different from conventional braces? In one way, no. The underlying principles are the same: teeth move when under constant force, and both Invisalign and braces exert this force. In every other way, the aligner method differs from braces – significantly!

  • Invisalign planning involves x-rays, an examination and consultation, and images. Nowhere in the preparation for treatment is it necessary to have messy impressions taken. This alone is a huge leap forward into modern dental care!
  • The aligners used to straighten teeth are designed in cutting-edge software developed for this sole purpose. This software takes the images of your teeth and makes a precision animation from them. From here, a series of aligners evolves.
  • BPA-free plastic is the base for Invisalign aligners. These are perfectly clear and they form to your teeth so tightly that they are not likely to be noticed at all.
  • Aligners are not affixed. That means you can take them out so you can fully enjoy every meal. You can also take out aligners for a short time if you have a special event or will be posing for pictures. Just remember! Put them back in right away. If aligners are not worn as directed, your end-result may be affected.

See Why Gum Recession is Something to Avoid

gum diseaseGum recession is not a new problem. In fact, there was a common phrase used centuries ago that was directly related to this condition. Typically, it was an older person who may be called “long in the tooth.” Clearly, our teeth do not continue to grow longer as the years go by. What happens is that more tooth structure becomes visible when gum tissue recedes.

Gum Recession is not just a Cosmetic Problem

Part of the functionality of gum tissue is to cover the roots of teeth. When this does not happen, the same bacteria that cause cavities on other parts of tooth structure can do harm. In fact, because root structure is softer than enamel, more damage can be done in a shorter period of time.

When underlying structures are not adequately covered with gum tissue, one of the first indicators maybe tooth sensitivity. The intense reaction to hot or cold foods and beverages is the result of poorly protected nerves.

In many instances, gum recession occurs because this connective tissue you has broken down and strength. This results in increased risk for plaque accumulation and the development of small pockets that house oral bacteria. The build up within these pockets may cause persistent bad breath, and it definitely increases the risk for infection known as gingivitis.Does Gum Recession = Gingivitis? In many cases, the two conditions are interrelated. However, it is possible that your gums may be receding in the absence of infection. This could actually be a good thing because it gives us the opportunity to correct the issue at hand before gum disease develops.

Why Gums may Recede

  • You smoke or use tobacco. If this is a habit you engage in, you are no doubt aware of the inherent health risks. Specifically, if you chew tobacco, your gums are consistently in direct contact with harmful chemicals that impede oxygen absorption to regenerate tissue.
  • You brush too hard. It is not just that you brush and floss your teeth that is important, it is how you do it. Aggressive technique is not uncommon, so if you do it, you’re not alone. You are however, encouraged to learn a gentler way to manage your oral health. Abrasions are a common cause for gum recession.
  • You brush infrequently. The frequency with which you brush your teeth is important because it only takes about 24 hours for plaque to accumulate at the gum line.

Price and our experienced dental team can help you keep your gums healthy. Schedule a visit to our Springfield office for friendly care.

Let’s Talk Dental Check-ups!

Dental Check-upContrary to the common impression, dentistry is not intended as an “after-the-fact” method of health care. In our practice, we encourage routine visits at six-month intervals. It may seem as though the dental check-up does very little, but that is not accurate. A lot goes on behind the scenes of these visits!

Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is still something that we don’t talk much about. Fortunately, this is because other dental conditions like decay and gum disease are much more prevalent. However, each dental check-up includes a thorough screening conducted by your dentist. Sometimes these screenings employ state-of-the-art technologies, though research suggests that these methods are not necessarily superior to a standard manual and visual oral cancer screening. What research does suggest is that the early detection of oral cancer leads to the most advantageous outcome.

New Toothbrush! Thanks!

Have you ever wondered about the new toothbrush you get after routine dental exams? There is good reason for this small gift. Brushing and flossing are the cornerstone activities of healthy teeth and gums, but many people forget to replace their toothbrush as often as they should. Your toothbrush really should be replaced every couple of months. Receiving one from your dentist can prompt renewed effectiveness in oral care.

What Happens in the Mouth, Stays in the Mouth – Not!

While many people know they want to avoid issues in their mouth, there remains a large misconception that conditions like cavities and gum disease are mere “dental problems.” This is not so. Research continues to provide us with valuable evidence as to why we want to minimize tooth decay and gum disease – and it’s not only about teeth.

Inflammation in oral tissues is the result of bacteria. The microorganisms that live in plaque are not stuck, by any means. They can pack up and move to a welcoming new location in your body by travelling along the digestive tract, the respiratory tract, or the blood; and research tells us they are up to no good. An unhealthy mouth reflects a risk for unhealthy conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and more.

Dental exams aren’t just about your teeth, although it may seem that way. To guard your smile – and your health, schedule your visit for routine dental care.

Cosmetic Dentistry: it Looks Good on You!

cosmetic dentistryCurrent data reveals that we are living longer now than our ancestors did. Data also reveals that more adults are looking for ways to maintain vitality and youthfulness. This pertains not only to health and wellness, but also to aesthetics. We find it exciting to live in an era in which age management and anti-aging treatments are so readily available. We are also excited to participate in this by offering outstanding cosmetic dentistry services to our patients.

What We Do for Your Smile

Dental care encompasses much more than it ever has before. While there is still a great deal of focus placed on prevention and restoration, there is also great interest in the area of cosmetic improvements. These improvements may be achieved through a number of methods.

Teeth whitening. Stains on enamel do more than diminish the beauty of your smile. According to research, discoloration is a major indicator of age. That being said, teeth whitening fits right into your anti-aging routine. Many people are able to revive their smile within just a few weeks of convenient home whitening treatment prescribed by our office. Don’t wait to bring new life to your smile!  Speak with us about your options for professional teeth whitening.

Tooth replacement. Perhaps one of the most advantageous developments in dentistry in recent years has been the emergence of dental implants. The tooth replacement available to previous generations involved unnatural looking, and poorly fitting, dentures. Today, dental implants top the list of optimal restorative care. This method of tooth replacement gives adults of all ages the ability to handle tooth loss in the most conservative and most attractive manner. Even dentures have improved in the area of fit and aesthetics thanks to the use of modern materials that mimic the characteristics of natural enamel.

From teeth whitening to tooth colored fillings to porcelain veneers and lifelike dental implants, we enjoy performing dental care with the end goal of complete satisfaction in mind. We look forward to helping you enjoy the best of your smile throughout your life. Call (703)750-9404 to schedule your visit to our Springfield office.

Are you Struggling with Sensitive Teeth? This may be Why.

sensitive teeth

Tooth sensitivity, a mild to moderate discomfort that occurs when you drink a cold beverage, or possibly when you brush your teeth, can be distracting, to say the least. This problem is not uncommon, and you need to understand why your teeth may be sensitive so you can determine how to promote comfort through healthy habits.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

  • There are a few ways that enamel can suffer abrasion damage. In fact, many people inadvertently wear down this protective layer of enamel by brushing too hard. When enamel wears down, the underlying dentin, which is softer, is more susceptible to irritation. Protect your teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, non-abrasive toothpaste, and gentle motion to remove debris. Harder brushing does not make your teeth cleaner!
  • Oral care products. Many people like to swish some minty mouthwash after brushing and flossing. This is not necessarily a bad idea, unless you experience sensitivity. This could be due to harsh chemicals in your chosen product. Try a different mouthwash, or forego rinsing altogether.
  • For a long time, the primary concern associated with dentistry was tooth decay. Today, we are seeing many more people with eroded enamel. The excessive wearing down of this hard substance is thought to be the result of “acid washing” which is basically exposure to acidic substances such as soda and fruit juice. To protect your teeth from erosion, rinse your mouth with water after consuming coffee, carbonated beverages, or even vinegar salad dressing.
  • Tooth damage. If a tooth cracks or chips, the nerves that lie beneath the area of damage now sit closer to the surface. They are thus more responsive to external stimuli, such as temperature changes. A dental checkup can alert your dentist to damage that may be causing sensitivity.
  • Compromised restorations. Your dental fillings and crowns are made to last for many years. In some cases, such as amalgam fillings, it is possible that the margins between restorative material and enamel may loosen. Bacteria can then collect and cause irritation. It is important to have your dentist evaluate existing restorations to ensure soundness.

Get to Know the Benefits of Dental Implant Treatment

Dental ImplantsTooth loss is a problem for which centuries human effort has been invested. Come ancient civilizations even had the idea of implants, seeking a lasting solution for tooth loss with shells or human bone. In the last several decades, we have seen an impressive shift in tooth replacement thanks to modern day implants. These fixtures do not contain shell particles or bone tissue of any sort. They are made of quality titanium and placed with technique that achieves a number of benefits.

  • Conservative care. Most people do not like the idea of complex dentistry. However, some of the common methods of tooth replacement are actually more complicated than implants. Partial dentures and bridges are fixtures that rely on adjacent teeth for stability. As such, these methods cause more stress on remaining natural teeth. Because implants mimic the natural root structure, no anchoring on other teeth is necessary.
  • Natural look and feel. What could be better than a replacement tooth that feels just like your natural tooth did? Because implants are artificial roots that become stabilized in the jawbone, the final restoration has structural integrity that is most like natural teeth.
  • Full function. The stability achieved with implants has a significant effect on what you can eat, and how confident you feel about eating. This is especially relevant to people who would otherwise wear dentures. These fixtures lack the security of a root system, and can thus slide across the gums, or right across the floor, during a meal. Implants function just like natural teeth, so you can eat that steak, that apple, or any other food you would like.
  • Full sensation. An interesting note about implants as an alternative to a full upper denture is that, with the palate uncovered, you gain the entire sensation of flavors in various foods. When the tongue does not come into contact with the roof of the mouth, foods do not taste, well, tasty!
  • The restoration of confidence is one of the most important advantages of dental implant treatment, and one of the major reasons more and more patients are choosing this procedure.

You deserve the full effect of a healthy, attractive smile. To learn more about dental implants, call our Springfield office at (703)750-9404.

Your Toothbrush: What you Need to Know

brushingThat bristly little brush that you see morning and night is your first line of defense against potentially painful and costly dental problems. No one likes having cavities or inflamed gums, and brushing is an excellent way to avoid these problems. However, you need to know a little bit about your toothbrush so you can maximize its power!

Caring for your Toothbrush so it can Care for Your Teeth

You trust your toothbrush to keep your teeth clean and free of disease. However, did you know that the bristles of your brush can be very welcoming to bacteria, fungus, and germs? If these microorganisms build up on your brush, they are getting into our mouth. After you brush your teeth, leave your toothbrush in a place where it can fully dry out. This will inhibit the accumulation of bacteria.

You and Your Toothbrush, When to Call it Quits

You are not meant to have a lifelong relationship with any toothbrush. But just how often should you switch? No toothbrush should be overused to the point where bristles have flattened out and worn down. We recommend finding a new toothbrush about every three months. The durable new bristles will go a long way in helping you keep your mouth clean. It may also be a good idea to change your toothbrush if you have experienced a cold or flu, as bacteria can hide deep down between bristles.

Tips on Brushing

Your toothbrush cannot do magic on your teeth, making plaque instantaneously disappear. To get your teeth clean, you need to brush for two minutes, morning and night. Anything less and you are left with debris, bacteria, and a real risk of cavities and gum disease. After you have brushed each surface of your teeth with gentle motion, also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Bacteria that remain in these areas can cause bad breath and other problems.

Oral hygiene affects your breath, the integrity of your teeth and gums, and your sense of confidence about your smile. Our team is here to help when you need us. To schedule your routine exam and cleaning, call (703)750-9404.

Invisalign a Significant Advancement in the Evolution of Orthodontics

Did you know that the desire for a beautiful smile is nothing new? Evidence proves that ancient civilizations attempted to develop ways to straighten and whiten teeth. Dental issues have been a matter of contemplation since 400BC, even provoking thought from researchers and philosophers such as Hippocrates and Aristotle. The remains found in certain cultures, such as the Etruscans, indicate that orthodontic appliances had been fitted to those who had passed, presumably to preserve teeth for the afterlife.

The orthodontic treatment that we know today is thought to have originated between the 17th and the 19th century. During these centuries, French dental pioneers practiced tooth extraction and palate expansion to make room for teeth to develop. The standard model of braces emerged in the 19th century, when wires and elastics were placed to exert mild force onto the ligament which holds teeth out of alignment. From early models came the metal bracket and wire fixtures orthodontists use today. With periodic adjustments, these fixtures gradually move teeth into optimal position.

New Developments in Orthodontic Care

invisalignIn some cases, conventional orthodontia remains the best option for alignment correction. However, many patients of Dr. Price are able to achieve their desired outcome without ever having to wear metal fixtures on their teeth. An Invisalign Premier Provider, Dr. Price has helped numerous patients in Northern Virginia feel better about their smile.

Invisalign has taken the basic principles of orthodontic care and transformed the delivery method. Rather than using metal brackets and wires, the Invisalign system moves teeth with pressure from clear, plastic aligners. These appliances look similar to the trays used to whiten teeth, but they are formed in a unique manner that exerts the force needed to move teeth into their rightful position.

There are several benefits to Invisalign treatment, all of which are significant. Patients appreciate the fact that they can discreetly straighten their teeth. Without metal appliances, greater comfort is enjoyed throughout the course of treatment. Rather than having to visit the orthodontists periodically for orthodontic adjustments, patients need only switch their aligners every two weeks to continue the progression of movement. Because aligners are removable, oral hygiene can be maintained, decreasing the risk of cavities and gum irritation.

Immediate Dentures give you Reason to Keep Right on Smiling

In our Northern Virginia dental office, it is our desire to accommodate each patient’s needs. Dr. Price understands that there is no singular form of care that is right for every person. For this reason, our patients have choices in the services they may need. For instance, full dentures may suit patients who want an expedited way to replace missing teeth. However, traditional denture treatment requires an eight-week healing period before dentures can be seated. Knowing that this is not acceptable for many people, Dr. Price also offers immediate dentures.

Are immediate dentures right for you?

Some of the reasons that patients seek immediate denture treatment include:

  • Decay has damaged teeth down to the gum line
  • There are few natural teeth remaining, affecting appearance and functionality
  • Advanced periodontal disease is causing persistent problems
  • Remaining teeth are quite loose
  • Natural teeth are unhealthy and unattractive, and a fast solution is needed
  • Tooth replacement is wanted in as few visits as possible

What it takes to Get Immediate Dentures

denturesWe believe that dental care should be pleasant, efficient, and convenient. The process of immediate dentures involves a few very important steps:

  • We provide full details on the treatment process and ensure you have no lingering questions
  • We discuss payment and financing options as needed to ensure treatment fits into your budget
  • Data is gathered to assist us in designing your new smile
  • Specifics are sent to our dental lab, where your temporary denture will be made prior to your extraction procedure
  • The day of your extractions, your temporary denture will be seated
  • We will follow up with you to ensure the fit of your new denture is comfortable
  • Once your gums have fully healed, your final denture will be designed and made

Benefits of immediate dentures

The primary benefit to immediate dentures is that you will spend absolutely zero time without a full set of teeth. This process also has a positive effect on your overall state of oral health and well-being. This is especially true for individuals who are suffering advanced periodontal disease or tooth decay. Extracting unhealthy teeth and placing a well-fit denture can significantly improve comfort as well as confidence.

You deserve to feel good about your smile. Learn more about immediate dentures during your visit with Dr. Price.

Tips to get you Through Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign is an excellent alternative to traditional metal braces, and we are happy to be a Premier Provider to patients in the Northern Virginia area. If you are considering this innovative system to get your dream smile, you can benefit from these tips for maximizing your treatment.

invisalign

  • Remember to floss. Brushing is a given, but many people forget to floss. This is an important step to maintain healthy teeth and gums due to the full coverage of Invisalign aligners.
  • Commit to the recommended wear. With braces, you have no choice but to comply with your dentist’s treatment plan. Invisalign gives you the freedom to remove aligners. However, the intent is for aligners to be worn 22 hours a day or more, removed only for meals and oral hygiene.
  • Stick to the plan. Teeth are straightened through a series of aligners. It is up to you to progress through the series on your own. Aligners should be worn for two weeks and then switched to the next set. Do not lag in switching, and do not bypass any set in the series; this will alter your entire treatment plan.
  • Get used to the awkwardness. Because aligners are not designed to fit your teeth as they are, but to move them to proper position, they will most likely feel a bit awkward, at least for a day or two until your teeth begin to move. Trust that you will get used to it and that it will pass. Do not remove aligners to improve comfort.
  • More awkwardness. In addition to feeling slightly “off,” aligners may just cause you to develop a temporary lisp. The more you adapt to your aligners, the less you will notice this.
  • Give your aligners the care they need. It is not only important that you brush and floss your teeth, but also that you give your aligners proper care. Antibacterial soap may be applied to aligners but they should not be brushed. Just rinse the soap off with cool water. Toothpaste should not be used on aligners; it can cause abrasions that harbor bacteria.
  • Accept the retainer. Invisalign treatment is just the first step in gaining a healthier, more attractive smile. After your course of treatment, you will need to wear a retainer to prevent orthodontic relapse.

Invisalign has simplified the orthodontic process for many people. To learn more, schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.
